Climate-resilient agriculture

Context

Agriculture in West Africa is predominantly rain-fed. Farmers are facing growing challenges, including disrupted cropping calendars, increasingly erratic rainfall, droughts, floods, soil degradation and poorly structured, volatile markets that offer declining returns. As a result, smallholder farmers are seeing their productivity and income come under increasing pressure. Many lack access to the resources, training and financing needed to adapt to these changing conditions. Approaches based solely on facilitating access to credit are no longer sufficient to address the scale of the challenges.

Strategy

Smallholder farmers are at the heart of the programme's strategy. To support their transition to more climate-resilient farming practices, ADA works with partners to develop tailored, integrated support packages. These combine agricultural credit and insurance products, training and technical assistance, access to high-quality agricultural inputs, equipment and machinery as well as improved access to profitable markets.

To reach smallholder farmers effectively, ADA relies on two complementary channels: microfinance institutions and farmers' organisations.
