Digitalisation helps to improve the quality of macadamia nuts in Kenya
25 March 2026
When pests and wrong harvesting practices led to a decline in the quality of macadamia nuts in Kenya, it became urgent to improve agricultural methods. Video training and farm field demonstrations helped to minimise the problem. As a result, smallholder farmers in Kenya were able to adopt better pest control methods and improve the quality of their macadamia nuts.
SSNUP co-funded an AgDevCo technical assistance project for Afrimac Nut Company Ltd, which provided farmers with improved seedlings and video-based training on climate-smart good agricultural practices.
The productivity and quality of macadamia nuts produced in the country had deteriorated slightly mainly due to increased insect damage associated with climate change, and to the harvesting of immature nuts driven by farmers’ concerns over cash flow and nut theft. The combination of video training and of demonstration farm field days proved to have a greater impact than video training alone, improving harvest timing and minimising pest pressure.
